Custom Orthotics

Dr. Elder is a partner with the Orthotic Group to provide custom orthotics.

What are custom orthotics?

A custom orthotic is a device designed to align the foot and ankle into the most anatomically efficient position. They look like insoles, but are biomechanical medical appliances that are custom made to correct your specific foot imbalance. Custom orthotics work on your feet much like glasses work on your eyes - they reduce stress and strain on your body by bringing your feet back into proper alignment. The plastic body of the custom orthotic helps to re-align the foot by redirecting and reducing certain motion that takes place during the gait cycle. Custom orthotics fit into your shoes as comfortably as an insole - and they have the advantage of having been made from precise imprints of your feet.

Custom orthotics play an important role in reducing stress and strain on the body by restoring a natural balance through healthy movement patterns. With regular use, custom orthotics will allow you to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle. Even though they will last for several years, a comprehensive gait assessment every one to two years is recommended to ensure that the custom orthotics continue to meet your changing needs.

Custom Orthotics treat conditions such as Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendonitis, Bunion Pain and Heel Spurs.

The symptoms of poor foot mechanics can include any one of the following:

  • Localized foot pain

  • Bunions, hammer toes

  • Arch/heel pain

  • Leg/knee pain

  • Hip or back pain - even neck pain

If you are experiencing pain and discomfort as a result of the way you walk and believe you are a candidate for orthotic therapy, then contact Dr. Elder who will provide a physical examination, gait analysis and diagnosis. If he recommends a custom orthotic, the dynamic cast of each foot will be sent to the Orthotic Group where a skilled team of technicians will manufacture a pair of orthotics to meet your unique needs.

Most insurance companies pay for all or a portion of the cost of custom orthotics. We recommend checking with your insurance company about their specific policies regarding benefits. We cannot direct bill insurance companies for orthotics so the patient must pay us and we provide the patient with the required insurance documentation to submit to their insurance company for reimbursement.
